The moon is always up there. Its something that you see on a regular basis. Earth did not always have a moon, so where did it come from. The leading scientific theory is that an object about the size of Mars, called Theia, collided with Earth about 4.5 billion years ago. Striking at an oblique angle, it raised a cloud of debris that then coa-lesced to form the Moon. the moon is currently about 225,623 miles away from earth but when it was formed it was about 14,000 miles away. The moon slowly gets further and further away at a rate of about 3.8 cm a year. So what does that mean for the earth. Well eventually the oceans tides will weaken and the spectacular moment of watching an eclipses will be lost to the past. But don't worry because we will all be dead and gone by this time as it could take up to a billion years for that to happen. But what would happen if it suddenly disappeared or get destroyed. |--| Could the earth or even humans survive without it. First of all, if the moon were destroyed violently enough for it to break apart, we'd likely experience a pretty violent moon rock storm down here on Earth. |--| And Tides will still exist from the sun's pull, though they would be smaller.Due to how tides are a drag on the earth's rotation, the earth's spin is gradually slowing down -- days are getting longer. Without the moon, this slowdown would be even more gradual so days would be long since the earth would actually spin a little faster without the moon. Also some scientists think if the moon disseaperad that it could wildly swing the earth off its axis resulting in huge climate changes and. There would be more earthquakes and volcanoes.
